The combination of clarinet, cello, and piano enthralled both Beethoven and Brahms, resulting in these two major staples of the chamber music canon.
WHAT’S THE FREQUENCY?
Sunday, October 27, 3:00 pm
Purchase Performing Arts Center
Danail Rachev, conducting
George Antheil: Serenade
Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 5
Schubert: Symphony No. 5
It’s a half-step between Mozart’s A Major concerto (in the magnificent hands of Bella Hristova, making her third appearance with us) and Schubert’s B-flat Major Symphony. But if you were to ask American composer George Antheil during World War II about his music, he would not have provided an answer. This multi-disciplinary genius teamed up with actress (and multi-disciplinary genius) Heddy Lamar to develop an encoding system utilizing musical frequencies that could guide Allied torpedoes against Nazi u-boats. It became the foundation for how telecommunications work today. Danail Rachev returns to bestow his special conducting gifts upon all of it.

Her impassioned energy, interpretive integrity, and vibrant communication bring a freshness to the well-known Mendelssohn, who’s favorite Beethoven symphony was…the fourth! Maestro Abdullah, making his third appearance with us since 2016, also brings his operatic bona fides to Mozart’s Cosi.
